FAQ
Owning a Dachshund is unlike any other pet. The more you try to understand your dachshund the more Questions you will have. When you think you have all the Answers, you find out that what you knew (or thought you knew) is either all false or just the tip of the iceberg. We at the Coffee Bean Kennel pride ourselves in being professionals of this curious little breed. We ask that if you have any Questions pertaining to Dachshunds that are not on this page, please write us with your Question and we will hopefully be able to give you clear Answer. Dachshund genetic testing is still in its infancy, so technically there are many unknowns, but we will try our best.
Question - How much should I feed my new puppy?
Answer - A dachshund puppy needs to have accessibility to food and water at all times. After the puppy is an adult (12-16 Months), you will be able to set specific feeding times.
Question - With all the Puppy/Dog foods on the market, what should I feed him/her?
Answer - We feed only Canidae All Life Stages Dry Food. Dachshunds require more protein than the average canine and Canidae is an excellent source of Omega 3, 6, & 9 Fatty Acids. Not to mention a long list of vitamins, minerals, and natural ingredients to keep your new dachshund healthy and happy for many years.
Question - Where can I buy Canidae? And why is it better than retail dog foods.
Answer - Canidae can be bought at most pet stores. If you’re local pet store does not have it, ask them and they will likely order it for you. Canidae is made in the USA with 100% natural ingredients. Most retail dog foods have fillers that can cause numerous health problems, diseases, and even death.
Question - Why does my Doxie drink so much water.
Answer - Since canines cannot sweat like us humans, they need water to cool their bodies and replenish fluids. A dachshund is more muscular than the average canine, thus requiring more water. Always keep clean fresh water available for you Doxie 24/7.
Question - Does the Coffee Bean Kennel house train or pad train their puppies.
Answer - We prefer to pad train our doxie pups. Dachshunds make wonderful pets for many different environments. All of our puppies begin pad training a 3 weeks of age and are nearly 100% pad trained by the 8th week.
Question - Why is my puppy peeing everywhere?!
Answer - It is very important that you as a new owner understand t
hat a dachshund will need guidance with this issue probably their entire life. Not because they are unintelligent, but because they are very independent will try you patience to see how far they can go with a bad behavior.Question - What are some ways I can keep my puppy from expelling everywhere?
Answer - First, clean any and all spots that your puppy has marked. Second, purchase puppy pads made with pheromones. Whenever you start to see signs of your puppy about to pee, move him/her quickly to the pad. Let them know of their good deed by giving treats. If a mistake is made, use a puppy pad to clean it up and show the puppy the spot where they should have went.
Question - Why does my doxie pee when I or someone else approaches him/her.
Answer - Most smaller breeds do what is called "excited peeing". To avoid this, say you are just coming home, do not initially greet you doxie. Go on about your business for a couple minutes. By that time your doxie should be calmer. Kneel down to the pups’ level and let him/her come to your hand. Towering and reaching are two factors in "excited peeing". Excited peeing is the response of submission to you. Some doxies just roll on their backs when they submit to you and other both roll-over and pee.
Question - When does my puppy need shots?
Answer - Puppies require shots at 6, 8, 12, and 18 weeks. Then at the age of 1 year and annually after that. Rabies shots are required in most places on an annual basis after the age of 4 months.
Question - When should I de-worm my puppy?
Answer - We start de-worming our puppies from the age of 2 weeks. They contract round worms from their mothers milk, thus if not treated can lead to stunting of growth and health issues as the pup gets older. We recommend de-worming your pup every two weeks until the age of 18 weeks. Depending on the area of the country you live in and your vet’s recommendation, worm accordingly. Note: Dachshunds are especially susceptible to Tape Worms and Hook Worms, due to their digging nature.
Question - A friend of mine bought a new puppy at 6 weeks of age, why does the Coffee Bean Kennel wait until at least 8 weeks.
Answer - Because it ILLEGAL! It is Federal Law that no puppy shall be sold and removed off premises under the age of 8 weeks. No puppy is 100% weaned at 6 weeks and he/she needs those two extra weeks to grow mentally and physically.
Question - Why does the Coffee Bean Kennel only offer Pet Contracts to its customers?
Answer - Between Puppy Mills, Hobby Breeding, and Breeding just because (...), small breeds, especially dachshunds, are being over bred and are over populating Animal Shelters. Not to mention that little or no genetic interest/knowledge is taken into account. Thus, weakening the breed standards. Causing countless health problems, deaths, financial burdens upon owners, shelters, and the tax payers. We at the Coffee Bean Kennel must pre-approve any sale of a pup that is intended for breeding. An extensive background/history check will be included in the addition fee and must be paid upfront.
Question - Does the Coffee Bean Kennel sale puppies intended for Show or Sport.
Answer - Yes, starting mid-2008 we will be offering puppies that should be of extremely high show quality. Each coming with Full AKC registrations and Pedigrees. We encourage sportsmen/women to put our dachshunds to the test in field and hunting events. Not all Sport Events are sponsored by the AKC, thus not requiring AKC registrations to enter.
